This course emphasizes learning basic conversational, reading, and writing skills in the French language including family life, school, restaurants, markets, transportation, food, clothing, and shopping. This course continues the focus on improving and building conversational, reading, and writing skills in the French Language. More cultural topics about the French speaking world are explored including daily life, travel, parties and celebrations, and customs. Students will again practice and enhance their language skills through videos, games, songs, skits, conversations, short readings and essays. Success depends on strong study skills.
French III (2 terms, 1 credit)

This course completes the study of basic grammar and continues to improve listening and reading, comprehension, written and oral communication and cultural awareness. Students will be able to read and discuss short stories. Two special units include Paris and French impressionism, culminating in a visit to the Chicago art museum and a French restaurant. This class is conducted primarily in French.
French IV (2 terms, 1 credit)

Students will refine and deepen their knowledge of French through conversation, reading and composition. They will study the history of France from Roman times through the 18th century, as well as explore the provinces of modern France from chateaux to Provence to Paris. They will read and discuss various short stories as well a novel, The Little Prince. The class is conducted in French.
French V (H) (2 terms, 1 credit)

This honors course develops advanced speaking and writing skills and enhances cultural understanding. Students study contemporary France and Francophone countries through the use of authentic materials (video, audio, computer, literature) in order to develop a high degree of proficiency in the language. Students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement exam in May.

Students continue to develop the communicative skills of listening, speaking, writing, and reading by means of language drills, games, role-playing, and comprehensible input/ output. In addition, through more in-depth reading, students survey Latin American history and cultures. Each student produces in Spanish a written and oral presentation of an individual country.

The major emphasis in this course is on reading, composition, culture, and conversation. The study of the Spanish culture is emphasized. Novels, short stories and plays are read and discussed in Spanish including an introduction to Cervantes' classic Don Quijote. Spanish grammar is reviewed and many conversational activities are initiated.

This honors course focuses on reading and conversational on topical subjects as well as listening comprehension assessment. It also includes projects and oral presentations and individualized grammar review. Students are encouraged to take the Advance Placement exam in May.

You will read in Latin the adventures of a typical ancient Roman family. You will learn Latin grammar and apply it to Latin creative writings that you will do in class. Latin derivatives in English words are a constant focus. You will learn cultural and historical information through Latin readings, essays, maps, art and myths which are in your Latin text.
Latin II (2 terms, 1 credit)

You will complete the Level 1 ECCE ROMANI text and the move on to the Level II text which continues the adventures of the Cornelii family. The level of the readings and grammar will be more advanced to prepare you for advanced readings of Latin authors. You will continue to learn Latin grammar and apply it to Latin creative writings that you will do in class. Latin derivatives in English words are a constant focus. You will learn cultural and historical information through Latin readings, essays, maps, art and myths.

You will translate and analyze selections from the lyric poetry of Catullus and Horace and study the universal themes and poetic figures of these authors. You will complete selections from Level III ECCE ROMANI reading excerpts from the great ancient writers including Cicero, Caesar, and Pliny and continue your study of more advanced grammar topics.
Latin IV (2 terms, 1 credit)
Prerequisite: A grade of "B" in Latin III is recommendedLevel: Jr, Sr Elective

You will read from Vergil's AENEID, the great epic poem of ancient Rome, completing Books I, II, IV and VI. Special emphasis is on the analysis of the themes, characters, historic significance, literary figures and the epic hero.
