Students will learn about the career opportunities and skills required in the various construction trades associated with home construction. Concrete, steel and wood as construction materials, foundation, floor, wall and roof framing, exterior and interior finish carpentry, and electrical writing will be the major focuses. Students will build realistic floors, decks, walls and roofs in the classroom to learn how to build residential structures as well as wiring basic electrical circuits commonly found in buildings. Building Trades II will allow you to further develop and refine your construction skills. The complete construction of a single family home, from pouring the foundation to the framing and interior finish work, will provide you with the practical experiences and skills required by the building trades industry. Information concerning site selection, design, financing, material estimating and marketing will be shared with you.
You will be required to:
- Provide and maintain typical carpentry hand tools.
- Provide and maintain required safety equipment.
- Enroll in the class for a full year
- Provide daily transportation to and from site.

This course will help you develop an understanding of manufacturing and construction technology. In the manufacturing area, you will gain knowledge and experience in research and development, product design, materials, and processes, tools and equipment, safety, production planning, and mass production. In the construction area, you will gain knowledge and experience in planning and designing structures, building structures. You will gain knowledge and experience in the areas of design manual drafting and computer aided design & drafting (CADD), object modeling and screen printing. The medium by which an architect, engineer, designer, draftsperson, and craftsperson communicates ideas through a system of lines and symbols. This is a course to provide students with the basic knowledge of design procedures, basic technical drawing skills and the principles of orthographic drawing, geometric construction, and lettering. Also covered is the use and care of drafting equipment, basic drawing layout, and single and multiview drawings. Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) is introduced in this course. This is a advanced vocational/college preparation level drafting course in the area of residential architecture. This course introduces the fundamentals of residential design. Topics include: architectural styles, equipment, symbols, floor plans, foundation plans, wall sections, elevations, and details. Each student will plan and design a residential home and prepare a set of drawings using Computer-Aided- Drafting (CAD). (Valees-I550)
Graphic Communication I (2 terms, 1 credit)

In this course you will study a variety of graphic arts occupations and acquire basic skills that will serve as a foundation for further training. You will learn basic design and layout, typography, process camera work, offset and screen printing, color theory and applications, and halftone photography. In this course you build on basics acquired in Graphics I and move into more advanced work. You will continue with advanced study of design and layout, desktop publishing, typesetting, keyline and paste up, line and halftone photography, film stripping, platemaking, offset press operation. Graphic Production (4 terms, 2 credits)
Prerequisite: Graphic Communication II/A grade of "C" or better is recommended.Level: Jr, Sr Elective

You will train in an actual production environment and will be involved in the tasks of a commercial print shop as well as individual projects. You will plan an important role in the production of the school newspaper, fine arts/literary magazine, Booster Club All Sports Program, as well as many other high quality, challenging projects. Work includes color separation, multicolored printing, computer design, advanced film assembly techniques and special effects. (Valees-I334)
Graphic Arts Management (4 terms, 2 credits)

You will continue to work on and perfect the techniques learned in Graphic Productions. You will also assume a leadership role in production tasks and will assume estimating, scheduling, customer relations and financial management responsibilities. Photography (1 term, .5 credit)

You will learn how to use a camera, develop film, and use an enlarger to make photographic prints. You will learn about light and lighting, exposure, depth of field, film, lenses, and filters. You will learn the art of photographic composition, creative darkroom techniques, and the history of photography.
You will undertake a variety of challenging assignments from working with patterns and textures to still-life and portrait photography. The final project, the master project, will give you the chance to use all your knowledge and creativity to produce an outstanding work of art. You will also have the opportunity to use modern digital equipment including a digital camera, film scanner, and photo-realistic printer. You will learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop. To successfully participate in the course you will need an adjustable 35mm single lens reflex camera. Older manual cameras like the Pentax K100 or the Minolta SRT101 are perfect. Modern automatic cameras are OK if they have a manual mode. It will also be good if you have access to a digital camera of more than 3 mega pixels.
Because of the substantial quality of costly materials used, the course is expensive. In addition to the lab fee, students will need to purchase a supply packet of film, photo paper and other necessities for approximately $60.
Photography II (1 term, .5 credit)

Fee: Lab fee of $35.00 and materials fee for film, paper, etc.
which could cost as much as $100.00. Students must have a good 35 MM single reflex camera and access to a good digital camera.
Photography II is an advanced course in photography and digital imaging for those students who have excelled in the introductory photo course and have a real passion for and interest in photographic art and science. Students will undertake a variety of technical and artistic projects. The course will also provide the opportunity to work with advanced darkroom and digital imaging techniques and processes. Projects may include portraiture, product and fashion photography, and photo journalism. Students will develop a portfolio, will create an on-line portfolio and will coordinate and participate in an exhibit.
