Physical Education and Drivers Education

To be eligible to receive a Batavia High School Diploma, a student must successfully complete the required Physical Education program unless excused as provided in this policy. Student may be excused from Physical Education for the following reasons:

  1. Medical. Any student who is unable to participate in Physical Education for medical reasons must present to the school nurse verification from a licensed physician.
  2. Religious. Students unable to participate in Physical Education due to religious consideration must present a letter from an ordained cleric of the faith involved. This letter must stipulate that the religious objection is based on a canon of the faith and applies to all members of the particular faith involved. Students excused from Physical Education for religious reasons must maintain a schedule of four classes each term.

Freshman Physical Education (1 term, .5 credit)

Prerequisite: None
Level: Fr Required
All freshman students will be enrolled in one (1) term of required physical education along with one (1) term of health education. All freshmen will participate in a variety of fitness and team activities.

Health Education (1 term, .5 credit)

Prerequisite: None
Level: Fr Required

This course will include the study of the following areas: human ecology and health, prevention, and control of disease, public and environmental health, consumer health, safety education and first aid, mental health and illness, appearance and personal health habits, alcohol and drug use and abuse, tobacco, nutrition, human growth and development and human sexuality including birth process, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases and Aids education.

Sophomore Physical Education (2 term, 1 credit)

Level: So Required
Fee: None
All sophomore students will be enrolled in two consecutive (2) terms of required physical education in the same semester (based on birth date). Eligible students will fulfill classroom driver education requirements during the course. Elective offering are listed with Jr/Sr Physical Education.

Driver Education

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing (State law requires that in order to be eligible for driver education, a student must have received a minimum of 4 credits in the previous two semesters.)

Fee: $307.00 (Behind the Wheel only) This fee will likely be raised for 07-08.
Classroom: Sophomore students who qualify will automatically be scheduled for the classroom portion of driver education as part of their required semester of physical education. Older sophomores will be scheduled first semester. Behind-the-Wheel: Eligible students will be scheduled for behind-the-wheel training during their physical education class or after school. Assignments will be made strictly by order of birthdays.

Junior & Senior Physical Education (1 term, .5 credit)

Prerequisite: None except as noted for Accelerated PE
Level: Jr, Sr Required

All juniors & seniors must enroll in a minimum of four (4) terms of physical education during the two (2) year elective program. Elective offerings are listed below:
Accelerated PE - Offered all 4 terms Prerequisite: You must be on an athletic eligibility list from the previous year.
Accelerated PE is a course for sophomore through senior student-athletes. The course covers the basics of strength training using a program from Northwestern University. All five components of physical fitness are covered/performed in the class daily. Students are responsible for learning basic concepts in the areas of anatomy, physiology, Kinesiology, and nutrition. Quizzes, written midterms and final exams are given in the course. Grading also includes some physical testing in strength and cardiovascular endurance. This course is for studentathletes who are serious about working out and learning more about the body's responses to physical activity.

General PE - Offered all 4 terms

Prerequisite: None
General PE - Depending upon the time of year, your class size and the facility available you will participate in at least three of the following activities:
  • Touch Football, Soccer, Golf
  • Speed-A-Way, Softball, Tennis
  • Team Handball, Badminton, Volleyball
  • Ultimate Frisbee, Pickleball, Basketball
  • Eclipse Ball, Floor Hockey
  • Dance - Offered all 4 terms
Prerequisite: None.
Dance Unit - The dance unit is a beginning/ intermediate level dance class that incorporates several forms of dance. The dance forms that may be included will be improvisation, jazz, hip hop, tap, ballet, aerobic dance, social dance and modern.

Personal Fitness - Offered all 4 terms

Prerequisite: None
Fee: $5.00 HRM strap if you don't have one
Personal Fitness - the Personal Fitness class is designed to increase your knowledge and understanding in the areas of cardiovascular and muscular fitness. The students will be able apply this knowledge to their own individualized fitness and training programs. A variety of rigorous training methods will be used to enhance your overall fitness level.

Walking - Offered terms 1 & 4

Prerequisite: None
Fee: $5.00 Walking Book (1 per year)
Walking for Wellness - This walking unit will include a variety of walking routines and nutritional maintenance to enhance your overall fitness. Individual journals and personalized goals will help each student find success. This is a great class for those students who find it difficult to run because of asthma or other medical limitations.

Winter Walking - Offered terms 2 & 3

Prerequisite: None
Fee: $5.00 Walking Book if you don't have one
Winter Walking - This is a colder version of Walking for Wellness. All students must be prepared to walk in all weather conditions.

Physical Education Leadership (2 terms, 1 credit)

Prerequisite: Application must be completed and consent of the instructor
Level: Jr, Sr Elective
Fee: None
PE Leaders will help in the adaptive PE class. This will fulfill your PE requirement. Your job will be to work with the teacher and multiple-needs students in their adaptive PE on a daily basis. This will be a valuable learning experience for students who may be planning on a major in PE, special education, physical therapy, or any health or education related occupation. Students may repeat this class one time. If a student does not meet the minimal requirements for an elective PE class, they may be removed from the selected elective and assigned a General PE class.
