Study Skills/Resource (1 term, .5 credit)

This course is designed to teach students a variety of study skills and to give students an opportunity to apply these skills, with support to assignments from other classes. Study skills taught in this course include reading strategies such as summarization, note taking from text and lecture, outlining, and test taking. A maximum of 4 credits may be earned for this course.

The instructional classroom serves students who are earning grades by completing their work and behaving appropriately. Each course is taught by a special education teacher.

Relationships and Responsibilities (2 terms, 1 credit)

The course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to understand the psychology of human behavior and experience positive application of communication skills. Students will apply these concepts to experience successful human relationships through communication skills, emotional control, and problem solving skills.

Instructional Reading (2 terms, l credit)

The purpose of the Instructional Reading program is to assist students in developing active reading strategies that can be used in general informational, recreational, and context area reading. Strategies are utilized to address word attack and comprehension skills, vocabulary, reading rate and fluency. Use of high interest literature and reading activities will be incorporated into the curriculum to help students develop and maintain a positive attitude toward reading. Students will also be able to apply the above skills through the assistance of direct resource support to address their standard course requirements.

Instructional Writing (2 terms, l credit)

The purpose of the Instructional Writing program is to assist students in developing strategies to improve written language skills. Students will complete various types of writing assignments, incorporating vocabulary and grammar skills. Sentence structure, paragraph structure, and the fiveparagraph essay structure, as well as, editing skills, will be utilized. Short story literature will be read and applied to writing assignments. A writing portfolio will be kept to monitor students' progress. Direct resource support to address standard course requirements will be available.
