Guidance Newsletter
Spring 2008
This is our last newsletter for this school year. We will continue the newsletter in the fall. We want to welcome the incoming freshmen and their parents to the high school. You will be receiving this newsletter each quarter next year.
Registration for the 2008-09 school year will be the week of August 4. Specific times, dates and location will be communicated when they are determined.
Of Interest to All
Information about summer school at Waubonsee Community College is now available. Information on other programs should be available soon. Enclosed is a listing of WCC summer school mathematic courses that students can take to repeat a math class if they earn a D or F. June 18 is the deadline to register for WCC summer school. Counselors are NOT necessarily in the office between 6/6 and 6/18. If you feel your student may be in need of remediation through summer school please contact the teacher and/or counselor prior to the end of school to determine if summer school is necessary. If a student is unable to attend summer school, contact the counselor during the summer to reschedule the class for the next school year.
The Prairie State Achievement Exams will be administered to juniors on April 23-24.
Freshman, sophomores, and seniors are not in attendance on these days
Registration confirmations will be mailed home with 3rd term report cards. These should reflect any courses already requested. Further requests for changes will be honored on a space available basis thru May 15, 2008. Current 8th graders (Class of 2012) will receive their registration confirmations the 2nd week in April. Changes will be allowed on a space available basis thru May 15.
After May 15 student/parent initiated schedule change requests will not be accepted. Schedules will be changed only for the following reasons:
- A student does not meet the course prerequisite.
- A student needs to reschedule a course required for graduation.
- Class sizes need to be balanced.
- The course a student has selected cannot be scheduled.
- Unbalanced schedule.
Of Interest to Freshmen
Summer classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction will be available this summer beginning June 11th. Our new flexible summer school schedule will enable us to accommodate your summer commitments. If you need further information or have any questions, please call 937-8600 ext. 5907. We look forward to meeting you!
Next fall, in November, the PLAN TEST will be given to all students in the class of 2011. This is a practice test for the ACT, the college admission test required by most universities and a required part of the Prairie State Exam. A letter with more detailed information will be mailed home in the fall.
Of Interest to Sophomores
Applications for summer Driver’s Ed for sophomores who did not take Driver’s Ed this year or who still need to take behind-the-wheel are now available in the Student Services Office. The fees are the same as during the school year.
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude (PSAT) will be offered to the class of 2010 in October. This is a practice test for the SAT and the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. The SAT is a college admission test used by some east and west coast colleges and certain highly selective universities. More information will be available in the Fall Guidance Newsletter.
Of Interest to Juniors
The ACT test will be offered for the last time this year on June 14. The deadline to register for this is May 9. Several schools in the area will be administering the June test. Registration materials are available in the Guidance Office. Students may also register online at www.actstudent.org. All juniors will also be taking the ACT on April 23as part of the Prairie State Achievement Exams. Students do not have to register for this test.
The SAT I and SAT II will be given in the area on June 7. Deadline to register for this test is May 6. Students planning to attend colleges on the east or west coast or certain highly selective universities may choose to take this test in addition to the ACT. Registration materials are available in the Guidance Office or online at www.collegeboard.com.
College Representatives will be visiting the high school throughout the spring. Listen to the announcements or check the college bulletin board in the main hallway for scheduled visits. If a junior would like to meet with a college rep they should sign up in the Guidance Office the day before the visit, and get a pass to be excused from class. Teachers will not release students without a pass.
Juniors should be researching colleges. Students in semester 1, Junior English Classes have already completed a college search unit with the counselor’s using Career Cruising. Counselors will also be working with Juniors in English this semester to complete the same unit. Students can access this program at home at www.careercruising.com.

Of Interest to Seniors
Advanced Placement Tests will be offered at BHS the first 2 weeks in May. If a student has registered with Mrs. Platt to take an AP test they should check with her or the bulletin that they received for the date of the test(s) they are taking.
Seniors need to pick up their immunization records from the school nurse. Colleges, technical schools, the armed services and many employers require that you have these on file with them in the fall so please keep them in a safe place when you receive them. The high school nurse is not available in the summer.
All seniors planning to attend the Senior Honor Awards Night on Wednesday, May 28 should carefully read the enclosed form (sent to seniors only). We enjoy recognizing the accomplishments and awards our seniors have received. In order for these to be printed in the program we must have accurate information returned to the Guidance Office no later than May 14. Students and parents will receive an invitation in the mail.
Graduation has been set for Friday, June 6. There will be a mandatory practice the morning of graduation. All graduates will complete a final transcript form at the practice so the guidance office can forward a final record to the school of their choice. Failure to complete and sign the form will negate the forwarding of a final record. Seniors and their parents will be receiving a mailing with detailed information regarding graduation.
Students planning to attend Waubonsee Community College could receive credit for Applied Learning Classes taken at BHS. See your counselor for the VALEES Credit Transfer Form.
