BHS Students Earn National World Language Exam Honors

Batavia High School students earned outstanding results on national exams in Spanish, Latin, and French. These exams are taken by thousands of students across the country and are highly competitive. Several BHS students also earned the State Seal of Biliteracy, which is awarded to students who, after rigorous testing, demonstrate proficiency in English and a second language. 

National Spanish Exam

For the Spanish exam, students scoring at or above the 95th percentile are awarded a Premio de Oro (gold award); students scoring from the 85th through the 94th percentiles receive a Premio de Plata (silver award); students scoring from the 75th through the 84th percentiles receive a Premio de Bronce (bronze award); and students scoring at or above the 50th percentile (national average) through the 74th percentile are awarded a Mención Honorífica (honorable mention).

For the Latin exam, gold medal and a summa cum laude certificate are awarded to top scorers; silver medal and a maxima cum laude certificate are awarded to second-place winners; a magna cum laude certificate is awarded to third-place winners; and a cum laude certificate is awarded to fourth-place winners.

State Seal Biliteracy Winners 2019

Students who earn the State Seal of Biliteracy have demonstrated proficiency in English and a second language.  On the rigorous foreign language tests, the students must score an intermediate high or advanced score in reading, writing, listening, and speaking (Latin is reading and writing only). Students must also must demonstrate proficiency in English as well—SAT and ACT scores are taken into consideration.
