Monday, November 11

  • Students and staff…today is Veterans’ Day. The origins of Veterans’ Day dates back to World War I. It was at 11am on November 11, 1918, that a temporary peace, or armistice, was signed and the fighting during World War I came to an end. A year later President Woodrow Wilson announced that November 11th would be called Armistice Day in the United States. In 1938 Armistice Day became a national federal holiday. It was a day dedicated to world peace and held in honor of the veterans of World War I. In 1954 Congress decided to change the day to Veteran’s Day. This was because they wanted to honor the veterans of all wars including World War II and the Korean War. Today, you may see a variety of students and staff members wearing a “poppy” , the red flower symbolically associated with Veterans’ Day, since the Armistice in 1919. We, the members of Rho Kappa and Youth and Government, hope that you take time to pause, reflect, and thank the veterans’ in your lives because as President Ronald Reagan powerfully said, “Freedom is a fragile thing and it’s never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people.” This is why we commemorate our veterans today and say, thank you.

Come out and be loud as we continue our quest for another state title!
