Congratulations to the Boys JV Baseball team on becoming the 2021 JV DuKane Conference Champions. The JV boys finished their season with an overall record of 17 Wins and 5 Losses and were 16-5 in conference. Coach Bartos and Coach Landers are extremely proud of the team’s hard work and dedication throughout this season!

Congratulations to the girls softball team!  Varsity and JV1 won their season opener on last night playing versing Metea Valley.  Varsity’s score was 10-5 and JV1’s score was 19-0.  Nice job!

Congratulations to the boys swim team for winning its second consecutive conference swim meet. Logan Townsend won two events while Mason Smith, Ryan Fors, Jai Vivekanandan, Johnny Masen, Alex Anderson, and Connor Nguyen all swam well. The boys would have finished 11th in the state had there been one. Congratulations on a great season!

Over the weekend the gymnastic team competed in the Dukane Conference Championship. Congratulations to Natalie Hayden for her 3rd place finish on Balance Beam and 4th place finish on Vault.

Congratulations to the boys swim team. They finished their regular season undefeated last night against Elgin. Ryan Fors and Alek Simeunovic broke another freshmen relay record. Connor Nguyen, Jack Schorr, Cade Hawkins, Jai Vivekananda, Mason Smith and Alex Anderson also swam well. Great job!

Our JV gymnastic team beat Lake Park on Friday night at our home meet while our Varsity recorded a season high team score. Congratulations to our seniors who were recognized at the meet: Clementine Sagot, Kendall Tollas, and Kaitlyn Wesender.  Nice job ladies!

Congratulations to the Varsity Dance Team for receiving 1st place in their Sectional and headed to the State Finals on Saturday.  Great job ladies!

DuBois, one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the first Black man elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters, was born on this day in Great Barrington, MA.  Dr. DuBois generally was recognized as one of the most incisive thinkers in the U.S. and one of the most profound scholars of his time.  He is quoted as saying; ““I believe in pride of race and lineage and self; in pride of self so deep as to scorn injustice to other selves.”

Today’s contribution comes from author Toni Morrison.  Morrison’s “genius” was recognized a year after her book Jazz was published with a momentous award: the Nobel Prize for Literature! The first Black person and only the eighth woman to win the award, Morrison told Dreifus that “it was as if the whole category of ‘female writer’ and ‘Black writer’ had been redeemed. I felt I represented a whole world of women who either were silenced or who had never received the imprimatur of the established literary world.”

In celebration of Black History Month we honor African-Americans’ contributions to the United States.Today’s contribution comes from Black and Latinx (luh-tee-neks) trans-teen activist Ashton Mota.  Ashton became a public face for a campaign aimed to uphold a Massachusetts state law that provides protections for transgender people. Ashton fought for the right to use his preferred name, to play on the boys’ basketball team, and continues to use his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ people of color.  Ashton is quoted as saying:  “Being a Youth Ambassador gave me the chance to make sure the stories of LGBTQ youth of color are heard.”

In celebration of Black History Month we honor African-Americans’ contributions to the United States. Today’s contribution comes from Civil Rights activist, Rosa Parks. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a racially segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was arrested and fined but her action led to a successful boycott of the Montgomery buses by African American riders. Her words still resonate today:  “You must never be fearful about what you’re doing when it is right.”

Today’s contribution comes from our first African-American Supreme Court justice, Thurgood Marshall. Thurgood Marshall played an instrumental role in promoting racial equality during the civil rights movement. As an attorney, he won more Supreme court cases than any other, including the landmark case of Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka. Mr. Marshall is known for saying:  “Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.”

Wednesday night your Bulldog Gymnastic team competed against Geneva HS.  Top JV Bulldog performers were Bri Munoz on Vault and Floor and Maggie Connell on Bars and Beam.  Varsity top performers were Natalie Hayden on Vault, Bars and Beam along with Kaitlyn Wesender on Floor.  Good job girls.

Congrats to the boys swim team on a victory against Bartlett in both levels. Connor Nguyen took first in the 50 Backstroke and 50 Freestyle, as well as a great split to help win the 400 Freestyle relay. Great job boys.

At 19, she became the country’s first Youth Poet Laureate. Last month, when she recited her poem, “The Hill We Climb,” at President Biden’s inauguration, she became the youngest inaugural poet in American history. And on Sunday, she became the first poet ever to perform for the Super Bowl.  Amanda is quoted as saying: “..what I want for myself and what I want for my country: more unity, more support for the arts and more opportunities for young writers from marginalized groups.”

This year’s fall play, Project Ensemble; Hope, will be live streamed on the Batavia Fine Arts Centre webpage today and tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.  Project Ensemble was entirely written by BHS students, featuring humorous and heartwarming scenes that all tie back into one theme – hope.  Each night’s show is different, so you won’t want to miss it.  It is free to watch, but donations are appreciated.
