BHS Students Share Unique Experiences in VALEES Graphic Communications Student of the Year Competition
For the 2022 VALEES Graphic Communications Student of the Year competition, Senior Rhiannon Dowdell and Juniors Laney Myers and Leah Myers competed against area high schools to create a marketing campaign. This year’s theme was to promote Career and Technical Education courses. This was the first year the design challenge was team-based, and these young designers did a great job bringing together their strengths and styles to create a coherent design package. Throughout the process, the team also included professional mentors Laura Ferguson, Graphic Design and Media Specialist for the Batavia Park District, and Jason Christiansen, wonder of JC Imaginations (and a BHS alum!). These mentors visited the classroom and continued with feedback throughout their process. On Friday, March 18, 2022, the team presented their work before a panel of judges (including their mentors), had to answer questions, and also individually showcase their portfolios. While they didn’t win (Oswego High School took home the team prize), Rhiannon Dowdell impressed the judges with her portfolio – especially the work she’s done for the past two BHS Rock the Runway events, and she was awarded the VALEES Graphic Communications Student of the Year. Big congratulations to you all!
