BHS Closure Information
Hello BPS101 Community-
We want to provide you with insight into why Batavia High School is closed today while all other schools are open, along with the action we are taking to address the situation.
A message was sent to BHS staff and families this morning informing them that the school would not be able to open due to temperature issues in the building. Sometime between 10 PM on Monday night and 6:00 AM Tuesday morning, a coil in one of the air handlers, responsible for transmitting hot water through the system to heat air in the building, broke. This loss in water pressure caused boilers throughout the building to shut down. As a result, temperatures in some classrooms dropped to as low as 45 degrees.
Our amazing buildings and maintenance crews, in collaboration with HVAC contractors, have been working diligently since Tuesday morning to address these issues, along with new issues that emerged this morning. While some classrooms are getting warmer, this temporary shutdown has created some cascading effects in the building’s primary classroom wings (C and D). Areas such as gyms, the fieldhouse, and other large spaces have maintained a comfortable temperature (in the upper 60s). We hosted events in those areas last night with no issues.
Unfortunately, the Second Semester Open House that was supposed to occur at BHS this evening has been canceled. We are actively monitoring the situation on-site and will have a final decision about all other after-school activities around noon today. Please stay tuned for updates in this regard.
This closure is not impacting other school buildings, so their events will continue. Please note that the open house for the Early Childhood Center at Alice Gustafson Elementary School will take place as planned.
Update from 12:30 PM
Hello BHS Families-
After-school activities are on as planned at BHS this evening. Areas such as the gyms, the fieldhouse, and other large spaces are maintaining a comfortable temperature (in the upper 60s). This includes practices, events, away contests, and more.
It’s important to note that participation is optional for students if families feel uneasy about sending them.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to coaches/sponsors.
Stay warm!
