Show Choir

Swingsingers is a 30-40 member mixed auditioned show choir under the direction of Maddy Kozar with assistance from fellow BHS alumni Addie Bloom and Maddy Misiura and high school choir director Peter Barsch. They compete in four competitions each year and also perform for Showtime in the BFAC every year. Auditions will be held in May, to build the group for the following year. Students must be enrolled in Choir, Band, or Orchestra during the day in order to be eligible for Swingsingers.

The show choir combo is made up of 8-12 student instrumentalists and perform along with the show choir at all of their performances. Each year, we need a drum set player, 2 piano/keyboard players, 1 guitar, 1 bass guitar, and several wind players (especially Trumpet, Trombone, and various saxophone players).

Auditions for 2024-2025: Please review before auditions!

  • Students should join this Google Calendar: juhdycr
  • All instructions for auditions are in the Google Classroom. Join ASAP, as all parts of the audition need to be completed by May 16, 2024.
  • Students do not need to be in choir in order to be in Swingsingers, but they are expected to be in a performance music course at BHS. If your schedule doesn’t allow this, please reach out to Mr. Barsch. You may qualify for a one-year deferment and still participate.
  • Financial obligations:
    • Student Activity Fee of $150. This is paid in Powerschool. All HS activities have this, and it goes toward things like transportation, director stipends, etc.
    • Dues of $375. This is paid by check, made out to Batavia High School, with the student’s name in the memo, and given directly to Mr. Barsch. It can be paid in installments. These Dues pay for things like costumes, music licensing and arrangement, performance equipment, etc.
    • Accessories: This varies in amount, and goes toward the purchase of earrings, shoes, and undergarments. While we order these items together for the bulk discount, each student can keep these items and usually reuse them in future years.
    • Show Choir hoodie: $40. This is the hoodie that all members have. Each kid usually gets one that they keep throughout high school.

SUMMER CHOIR CAMPS – there are a number of great summer camps available for students. The Music Buffs offer scholarships to ANY student interested in attending. Here’s some great ones we recommend:

  • Show Choir Camps of America – hosted at Millikin University or Heidelberg University (Show choir, Vocal Jazz, Pop Solo singing, Dance)
  • Illinois School Youth Music camp – hosted at University of Illinois (band, jazz, commercial music, musical theatre, hip-hop production, and more!)
  • Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp – hosted at Blue Lake in Michigan. (Band, Orchestra, art, dance, writing, jazz, theatre)
